Session 9
Dr. Nagy, the Bible mentions in chapter 14 verses 27 that one of the attendants, who stood by, drew his sword and struck the servant of the high priest and cut off his ear. My question is who was that person, and why did he act the way he did?
The Bible mentions in the Gospel of Matthew that Peter was the one who often took initiative among the disciples. The reason why he did this is obviously because he was the most impulsive one. He found his master in crisis and saw men carrying swords and sticks surrounding the disciples. The most natural reaction would be to use the sword as a solution. If The Jews would not show respect toward the new religion than the sword would settle it. They must go into battle to subdue those cities and people groups whereas the logic of Jesus was very different.
What was the logic the Lord Jesus was using? What was the alternative in a situation that only the power of the sword could resolve?
The logic of the Lord Jesus was a spiritual logic a divine heavenly one. It was the logic of love and peace. It is written in the Bible according to the book of Matthew, chapter 26 verses 52 to 54 that Lord Jesus did three great things. First, He said to the disciples and to Peter His great statement; the one that crowns every real Christian today, "Put your sword in its place, for all who take the sword will perish by the sword."(Matthew26: 52) As if the master was saying "I am the one who taught you and your colleagues to love your enemies and to bless the ones who curse you and who reject you, and today you start in my presence before my eyes using the sword." The sword is a sign of hatred. Settling spiritual issues and defending God on earth and His religion, cannot be resolved by using the sword or the knife or the bullet but trough love and forgiveness.
I can't understand what is the meaning of these words, "For all who take the sword will perish by the sword."
The meaning is very obvious. This is the heavenly law that the creator has established in the Old Testament. He said, "The one who sheds the blood of a human being, should have his own blood shed as well." Here the same meaning is repeated; the ones who use the power of the sword when facing the sword shall perish. How much more would be the punishment of a man who rewards human love by the sword? I would like to add an important fact that every individual or group of people or nation using the sword, shall reap the curse of the sword and its destructive power shall not depart from this individual's life or house or group or nation. Every house built upon using the sword is going to be judged by the sword because the Bible says that" all". Without exception, those who take the sword shall perish by the sword.
You said in a previous answer to the second question that the Lord Jesus did three great things. The first was what He said to Peter, what were The two other things?
The second thing is what He revealed to be a very important truth. Which is that He, all Glory belongs to Him, was well able to deliver Himself easily when He said to Peter, "Or do you think that I cannot now pray to My Father, and He will provide Me with more than twelve legions of angles?" (Matthew 26:53) If one angel in The Old Testament was able to destroy 185 thousand, what would twelve armies of angels do? This truth is enough to resolve The question that puzzled Al Razi, The famous scholar when he said, "How could The God, who often sustained Jesus through Holy Spirit power and miracles, forsake Him if He was able to raise The dead? Why was He unable to protect Himself?" The answer is, no. The Lord Jesus was not unable to protect Himself, but He chose to humble Himself and became obedient to The point of death. (Philippians 2:8) He went to The cross willingly not under pressure. He was determined to go out of The love so that all who believe in Him would not perish.
what was The third great thing that The Lord Jesus did while being arrested?
|
The third thing is that He healed and restored The ear of The servant of The high priest. The Lord Jesus did not speak about love, but He showed love in The darkest moments even while being arrested and this has indication. First of all, The Lord Jesus was full of love toward human beings even those who showed enmity toward Him and who did not believed in Him. He was ready to heal and restore them. Second of all is that He was truly a unique person; no human being can help His own oppressors. The fact that He fixed and restored The ear of The servant of The high priest is a miracle of creation and not just a healing one. How could The ear reconnect after being cut off? How could The nerves and veins and muscles heal in a second by The simple touch of The master? Therefore I'm calling you, dear listener, come to this unique person, Jesus, with every sickness or scar in your soul or body or spirit or your family or your marriage or your work. However great The scar might be, trust that He can touch your ear to hear and listen and to get your life restored. Finally, I say to you that The one, who did this miracle, is well able to touch your life, family, city and your country who was cursed by The sword. If you come back to Him confessing your sins and your transgressions, He will show mercy toward you and break The curse over you and give you blessings of His own. |
